Concussion Therapy in Santa Rosa, CA
Approximately 1.5 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the number one cause of both death and disability in children and young adults. Each year in America, approximately 300,000 individuals are seen by medical doctors as a result of a blow to the head. Of those, between 50,000 and 100,000 will have prolonged symptoms that affect their relationships, ability to work, and daily functioning. Unfortunately, concussion and TBI are not easy to treat medically. Most patients are sent home and encouraged by doctors to give the brain time to heal.
With a blow to the head, significant changes in the brain’s neural firing occur, resulting in stuck, unstable, and imbalanced patterns of cortical activity. Common symptoms resulting from these changes include:
- Memory Problems
- Difficulties with Focus and Attention
- Irritability and Angry Outbursts
- Brain Fog
- Slowed Mental Processing
Fortunately, there is growing evidence that suggests that neurofeedback, and specifically High Performance Neurofeedback (HPN), can make a significant difference for those suffering with post-concussive and TBI symptoms. HPN works with the brain to disentrain stuck patterns so that the it can return to its normal, resilient, and flexible state of functioning.
Here is a recent 2017 report that examines the short- and long-term benefits of HPN training on a group of NFL players who sustained TBI’s during their football careers. As the report shows, participants saw highly significant reductions in cognitive processing symptoms, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, frustration, depression, and brain fog, and significant reductions in headache, fatigue, light sensitivity, aggression, memory problems, and concentration difficulties. These results were both reported by participants and confirmed with neuropsychological testing and brain imaging.
Working with individuals with concussion and TBI is some of my favorite work, particularly adolescents or college-age individuals who have sustained injuries while participating in sports. My experience has been that not only do the individuals respond well to HPN training, but family members who notice the significant changes, feel like they are getting their child back.
