Neurofeedback – A Relationship Tool?

One of the things I’ve been struck by since I started offering neurofeedback in my practice is the way clients report that neurofeedback is improving their relationships. Clients usually seek neurofeedback because they are struggling with intense emotions – things like irritability, anxiety, stress, overwhelm – and these intense states frequently affect the quality of their relationships.

I have yet to encounter a new client seeking neurofeedback because they want to improve their relationships. However, with increased emotional regulation and a more settled, flexible nervous system that results from neurofeedback training, clients find they respond to partners and loved ones in calmer, more loving ways.

For example, clients frequently say things like, “My partner and I were recently getting into an argument and for the first time I could see where we were headed and I told him, ‘I’m gonna take a break because I don’t want to get into a fight.’” For many, this is the first time in their lives that this awareness has been present and it is so exciting to see clients catch themselves in this way so they can behave in the ways they want to – in caring, kind, respectful ways.

So, I am beginning to think of neurofeedback as a relationship tool. In fact, I have some clients who are partners and it is really exciting to hear both members of these couples report greater relationship satisfaction. If you are struggling with overwhelming emotions and find they are affecting your relationship, please contact us to learn more about how neurofeedback might be helpful.
