Neurofeedback for Adolescents

One of the things I love most about offering neurofeedback is my work with adolescents.

Adolescence is a difficult time for many teens – there is a lot to contend with socially, academically, physically, and emotionally. For some, these issues spiral into depression, anxiety, irritability, and difficulties managing overwhelming emotions. Neurofeedback helps adolescents by supporting their nervous systems to become better able to self-regulate. By reducing stuck patterns of over-and under-arousal, neurofeedback helps teens to feel better, more effective, and better equipped to handle the daily demand they face – which are many!

Here are a few of the issues I have helped adolescents with using neurofeedback:

  • Severe anxiety
  • Depression
  • Cutting
  • Trauma
  • Problems with motivation
  • Irritability
  • Concussion
  • AD/HD
  • Impulsivity
  • Overwhelming emotions
  • Social withdrawal
  • Poor academic performance

Neurofeedback is well-suited for adolescents for a number of reasons:

  • Some teens don't want to talk and, with neurofeedback, they don't have to. Neurofeedback works directly with the nervous system to help it regulate itself.
  • Most teens want relief now and neurofeedback tends to provide symptom reduction within a few sessions - often immediately.
  • Neurofeedback often provides a win-win for teens and parents. Often parents and teens are at odds with the goals of treatment. With neurofeedback, teens often experience the changes they desire, while parents see their teen begin to transform in the ways they desire.

What most excites me is when parents say things like, “I finally have my kid back,” or when the teen says, “I feel like my old self again.”
